Any educator knows that the mastery of the basics is essential in order to move ahead in the world of education. All of us in the education field are well aware of the fact that we all learn in different manners. Some of us are verbal, while some of us are visual. In an effort to connect with a variety of students, the elements of art can be portrayed in visual posters. These posters will help students focus on the basic elements of art; shape/form, color, space, line, and texture. Below are examples of these posters including descriptions of why I chose to create these posters the way I did.
Shape/Form
|
This poster was designed with the visually inclined in-mind. I chose bold, graphic, traditional geometric shapes, such as triangles, squares, and diamonds, in an effort to easily draw parallels in students' minds between new vocabulary and existing mental connections in regard to shape. For organic shapes, I chose things such as leaves and pears once again in an effort to connect to the students' current world views and ideals.
As for the form section, I wanted students to comprehend that form is a three-dimensional object, which is the reasoning behind the simple geometric forms (i.e. a cone, box, cube, etc). |
Color
|
Color is an element of art that moves us, that inspires us, that drives us to seek truths. Because color is so impacting on us, especially in the elementary setting when students are sponges of visual information, I chose to emphasis actual colors and color relationships in my Color poster. Because the rainbow assortment of colors in tempera and other paints are so expensive, I wanted to emphasis the ways in which colors can be derived from the primary colors, white, and black. I took careful time to visually provide students with the information necessary to properly create tints and shades.

Line
|
Lines are everywhere around us, from the lines on a sheet of writing paper to the lines we use to create the words we print. I chose to represent some of the many types of lines. This poster could easily be used as a reference during an activity in which students create a work of art using 3-5 different types of lines.

Space
|
When most people hear of the word space, they think of it in terms of positive and negative space. With my space poster, I wanted students to be able to understand the other elements of space. Beyond the examples of each element of space that are identified, other examples of these elements can be found in the same poster. This allows the educator to have students identity examples of the many elements of space.
